This keeps the learning process simple as only the controls needed to grasp a concept are on display. The Syntorial synthesis course is well-structured and builds upon previous lessons.Īt first glance, the GUI (graphic use interface) is almost barren. In case you’re worried about becoming overwhelmed by the sight of too many synthesizer control knobs, don’t worry. With Syntorial, you can now learn subtractive synthesis at your own pace while in the comfort of your home. Since then, e-learning has come a long way.

Between my full time job and other commitments, putting in the time to really understand the inner workings of synthesis was a challenge.

In 2008, I had enrolled in a synthesis course at my local college. Learn Subtractive Synthesis at Your Own Pace Syntorial’s interactive GUI His teaching method is clear, concise and to the point. Joe Hanley, the creator of Syntorial, does a great job of explaining every knob that is displayed on Syntorial’s interactive graphic user interface. It should be noted that each module is comprised of highly detailed video lessons given in a show-and-tell format. Similarly, if you’re an intermediate or experienced synthesizer programmer, the advanced synthesizer tutorials housed within Syntorial’s module has you covered. If you’re a beginner, then you will quickly acquire a solid understanding of the principles of waveforms, layering and doubling. The tutorial establishes the basics by laying down the foundation for sound design and synthesizer programming. In total there are 129 essential lessons suited for all user levels. The next modules address filters and amplifiers along with their respective envelopes. For instance, the first module familiarizes the user with the basic waveforms and their inherit characteristics. The modules cover key controls which are found on a typical synthesizer. It’s made up of modules, each containing interactive lessons, that outline the essentials for acquiring a thorough understanding of sound design. It’s designed to teach you everything you need to know about synthesis.

Feel free to experiment as long as you stay consistent with the current color scheme and feel, so that it looks like it belongs the design of the table of contents on the left side. What is Syntorial? Learn synthesis the easy way with Syntorial – The award winning app This is the first page someone sees when they open the app so we really want it to feel great for the users. The actual deliverable for the contest will only be one screen. Note, this is only to see how your design will change according to the user's progress. When the user finishes all lessons, the "Next Lesson" section becomes a "Congratulations" section. Everything else is secondary and should be arranged around it. This is the main point of this screen so I'd like it moved up and focused. The biggest goal is to emphasize the "Next Lesson" section that currently resides at the bottom. The main section below the message display (it starts with "Progress" at the top left) needs a total re-vamp. We'd like to have a cleaner and more modernized look. But this app is for musicians, not programmers.

The top right section with the message display, looks drab, and has a "code" style. The right half of the page needs to be redesigned (leaving the Table Of Contents section on the left side as is) This page was partially finished when we hit pause. This contest will be focused on the main Home section.

After this contest, we'll go on to work with the winner one-on-one to complete the remaining portions of the app. Sharp, modern, and flat design, with blues, greys, and oranges. There are already several pages designed, so the theme and style are set. We're looking for someone to pick up where he left off. Now that we're ready to resume the redesign, our graphic designer is no longer available. Partway through the redesign, we switched gears to another project. Syntorial was originally released back in 2013, and we started new a redesign in 2019.
